Bracing for the next two weeks like...

I was having dinner with my family. It was a rainy night, so our gas fireplace was on. Me, my husband Steve, and my girls (ages 5 and 8) were feeling cozy and happy. Suddenly, the fireplace started sputtering and flames leapt higher and higher. We panicked, thinking the gas line was failing and the house was about to blow up. Steve went to turn off the gas, and saw a small, black animal clinging to the fireplace screen. “Is it a bat?” my 5-year-old asked? We had no clue. Steve told us to stand back so he could take the screen outside and release the animal. He picked up the screen and stepped back. Suddenly, DOZENS OF BIRDS flew out of the chimney and into our living room. We all screamed and ducked for cover as soot-covered birds filled our house. As birds dive-bombed us, I ushered my sobbing girls into a bedroom and left Steve to defend his home for his wife and children. Steve gloved up and caught over 30 birds, one-by-one, and released them. I later learned that they were Vaux’s Swifts, and they roost in chimneys. Our walls and ceilings were absolutely covered in filth. It took days to clean, and we still find random bird shapes made out of soot in weird places around the house. Well, that was a first! We've been recording our podcast, Big Fat Positive: a Pregnancy and Parenting Journey, every week for over six years now, but this is the first time an earthquake has made a guest appearance! 🫨 What's really fascinating about this is how long it took to get to Shanna! You can see the epicenter (the star in this image) and where our two hosts were at the time of recording. It took over 10 seconds for the quake to travel from Laura's location in Glendale, to Shanna's in the North San Fernando Valley. 😵‍💫 We're thankful it was a relatively-small quake with no apparent damage, but this is really a good reminder for all of us to check our emergency-preparedness! I know I need to pack new clothes in our go bag for the kids -- I don't think the size 3-6 month onesies I have in there are going to fit my 5-year-old kiddo anymore. 😬 Did y'all feel the quake? #laearthquake #laquake #earthquake #losangelesearthquake
