In the Islamic tradition, almost everyone knows Imam al-Bukhari, a prominent hadith scholar who was born in Bukhara. His rigorous work in collecting and verifying hadith helped Muslims distinguish between authentic and unauthentic narrations. During his time, his student Imam al-Tirmidhi also emerged as one of the great hadith scholars, living in Termez, in the southern part of Uzbekistan. The works of these two scholars are still studied and used by Muslims around the world today. In the scientific world—especially in mathematics and computer science—the name Al-Khwarizmi stands out. His book on algebra laid the foundation for this field, and the term “algorithm,” which is fundamental in computer science, is derived from his name. Al-Khwarizmi came from Khiva, in the western part of Uzbekistan. In addition, other scholars such as Avicenna (Ibn Sina) from Bukhara and Abu Rayhan al-Biruni further demonstrated that the tradition of madrasah (education) should go hand in hand with religion. Their lives and works show that Islam encourages the pursuit of knowledge in both religious and worldly sciences. #bukhara #uzbekistan #scholars
