“For 20 years of my life, I was stuck in addiction and shame and condemnation. I couldn’t create. I was suffering with perfectionism, hating myself, and I was so hard on myself. All of the addiction swirling around, and I couldn’t really create. I tried to create, but it went through a lens of fogginess. I was in a long season of stagnation. It looked like a whole lot of nothing. I was either wasting time or being too hard on myself. Now it’s so polar opposite, and it’s so brand new. So to create now, it’s with God’s loving gaze. And I feel a celebration as I create. There’s a celebration of excellence and not having a need to perform, but to create in that beauty that He loves.” [Looking back,] “I would give myself a big hug, and I’d say, ‘Stop being so hard on yourself. No one asked you to be perfect. Let go of everything in the best way, surrender.’ And now I’d say, because I’ve tasted of Him and experienced Him so much more than I could fathom, I’d say, ‘There’s more right now. You can have Him now, not later. You can have Him now. Stop doing the things that take you away from Him, like throw it away – whatever it is. Smash your TV if you can’t control yourself. Break your phone if you can’t control yourself. Put the blunt down, man. Burn it all away. Put the drugs away. Stop.
