People started going missing around town. No one heard screams. No signs of a fight. A few days later, their bodies were found in the forest. Their skin had turned gray, and each of them had two bite marks on their necks. Not long after that the forest was closed off. Barbed wire went up around it. The vampires. They were supposed to be gone. Decades ago, soldiers and villagers burned an entire clan. Nothing was left by morning. Everyone believed it was over. But one of them survived. His name was Michael. He had been a child back then and the only one who made it out. He never forgot what happened, nor forgave it. William was a painter no one really knew. He was stuck, running out of time, ideas, and chances. The art competition coming up felt like his last shot at fixing things. But he couldn’t think of anything to paint. His head felt blank. That was when the murders started creeping into his thoughts. He didn’t know if the judges wanted something like that, or if it was just the only thing he could still focus on. So he decided to go into the forest. He packed wire cutters, an oil lamp, his sketchbook, and a pencil. He knew it was a bad idea, but went anyway. The lamp barely lit the way as he crossed the wire. Once he was inside, it felt like the forest closed in behind him. Fog clung to his legs as he walked. Everything was quiet. Too quiet. With every step he felt more unsure, like he’d already gone too far. The atmosphere made him thought about turning back more than once. Eventually, he stopped. This wasn’t worth it. No painting was worth risking his life for. William turned around and started to head back. That was when a sudden chill ran down his spine. Something was right behind him.
