SEA SNAKE RESCUE! This elegant sea snake — nicknamed Adam — was found washed up at Arrawarra, dehydrated and covered in algae. 🐍 Santa's Little Sea Snake 🐍 During a horse ride on Boambee Beach, Chris Fenech from HWH Stables discovered a sea snake in need of help. Acting quickly, he contacted Steve McEwan from Reptile World, who rescued the animal suffering from sun exposure and struggling to shed its skin after being washed ashore by rough seas. Now housed at Coffs Coast Wildlife Sanctuary, the Stokes's sea snake (Hydrophis stokesii) is receiving expert care. Shedding its skin leaves the snake vulnerable, and combined with heavy winds and strong surf, it couldn’t make it back out beyond the waves. Once it has fully recovered, it will be released back into its natural habitat. Did you know? The Stokes's sea snake is the largest and heaviest of all sea snakes, with the longest fangs. These venomous creatures are endemic to tropical Indo-Pacific waters and play a vital role in our marine ecosystems. Despite their fearsome reputation, they are peaceful unless disturbed. ⚠️ DISCLAIMER: These actions are conducted by trained professionals. On Saturday morning, the Coffs Coast Wildlife Sanctuary joined forces with the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) and ORCCA in response to a whale stranding at Wooli Beach.   A male melon-headed whale, weighing approximately 250 kg and measuring 2.8 metres, was discovered in distress within the wave zone. Despite valiant efforts from the team and local volunteers to move the whale to a safer location further up the beach, a combination of adverse weather conditions and the whale’s deteriorated state ultimately led to the decision to humanely euthanize the animal. While this outcome was difficult for all involved, CCWS is committed to supporting scientific research to gain insights from such tragic events. These unfortunate strandings often signal that an animal is in significant distress. #CCWS also wishes to acknowledge and express gratitude to NPWS, ORCCA, and local volunteers for their invaluable assistance in the rescue effort. Coffs Coast Wildlife Sanctuary responded to a potential dolphin stranding. The young dolphin was trapped in the low tide in Yamba through an underpass. The animal was assessed as being healthy and no need to intervene. On the high tide the mother swam back though to collect the baby and take to deeper water. This can be a common situation with young calf's as they learn tidal changes and hain confidence. Thanks to ORCCA and NPWS for also attending and monitoring the animal over the 24 hours. Great team work!
