So giant. So gentle. So Newfoundland 💚 Get to know one of the hardest working dogs in the working group; the lovable Newfoundland. This large dog takes his name from Northeast Canada where he was developed. If any dog deserves the working dog label it is the Newfoundland. His versatility has served man well: towing fishermen's carts; pulling logs from the forest for lumberjacks; hauling in fishermen's nets; jumping from boats to retrieve lost equipment; and in more recent times, jumping out of low flying planes and helicopters to rescue swimmers in distress. It is thought that the breed was not indigenous to Newfoundland but the ancestors of the breed arrived there with fishermen from Europe. They were selectively bred for their well-sprung ribs, oily waterproof coat and webbed feet to aid them in their water work. Instantly reocgnisable and utterly iconic ✨️ It is thought that small white dogs with luxurious coats have been the pampered pets in Mediterranean countries for centuries and these dogs form the ancestry of the Maltese. It is suggested that such dogs were taken to Malta by Phoenician traders and in 1805 a Knight of Malta wrote of the breed of dogs with long silky hair. The Royal Library of Malta houses a portrait dating back to 1833 depicting an example of the breed – very similar to the modern day Maltese. #crufts #Maltese

If you think Poodles are just show dogs, think again! This coat has purpose and helped keep the dog warm and efficient when retrieving ducks 🦆🐶 The Poodle originates in Germany, where it was bred as a water retriever, used by duck hunters. The ancestors of the breed were various water dogs of Europe. The trim, which is sometimes viewed as a fashionable fancy trim for show dogs, is in fact traditional and very practical: the hindquarters being clipped to aid the dog’s propulsion in swimming and the protective bands of hair (now fancifully called pom-poms) left on the joints and tip of the tail for protection from cold. The Kennel Club recognises three varieties, differentiated by size. All share the same standard. The Miniature and the Toy varieties are a result of scaling down and capturing the same features in a smaller mould. Earlier Standards recommended that the traditional lion trim was used in the show ring. More recently it has been acceptable to show Poodles in other types of trim. #crufts #poodle #standardpoodle
