Find the country's first public dashboard to track and fix emergency room overcrowding dashboard at https://overnight-boarding.ctacep.org Emergency departments at hospitals in Connecticut and across the nation are likely bursting at the seams as a result of what’s called ED boarding. The problem is not that too many patients are showing up at the ED. It’s that patients who have been discharged from the ED are needing longer-term care, but they’re stuck on hallway stretchers for hours or even days. The reason? Increased demand for in-patient beds, according to Connecticut College of Emergency Physicians (CCEP). Boarding patients are not well enough to return home – they might need a bed at a psychiatric hospital, connect with a behavioral health facility in the community, or require a bed at a rehabilitation center or nursing home. They also face delays in insurance companies authorizing longer-term care. Data shows that of the 14% of patients in a Connecticut ED in 2024 who required in-patient care – more than 200,000 people – nearly 40% remained in the ED for more than four hours after admission. “This threshold is widely agreed to be unacceptable and negatively impacts patient care,” CCEP said in a statement. “Boarding leads to poorer outcomes for patients, increased crowding, and significant staff burnout.” Lengthy boarding can result in “real, bad impacts on patient care outcomes,” said Dr. Jeff Gordon, a state senator and member of the state Public Health Committee. A train derailed in Mansfield Thursday morning, raising concerns of environmental contamination in a nearby waterway; fourteen train cars carrying liquified natural gas derailed and at least five landed in a river, officials said. No injuries are reported. A shelter in place order has been issued for residents within a half mile of 1090 Stafford Rd., state officials said. First responders and hazmat specialists are responding to a possible hazardous gas leak. "The incident is under control," said Rick Green, a spokesperson with the Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection. "There is no need for evacuation at this time." Residents are advised to avoid Route 32, Stafford Road, which is closed between Route 275 and Route 44 near Eagleville Pond, according to a post on a town social media account. The road is expected to be closed for a “prolonged” period of time. This is a developing story and will be updated. Read the latest via the link in the bio. Connecticut Public's Chris Polansky, Matt Dwyer and Patrick Skahill contributed to this report. Edit: Railroad officials say 10 train cars were involved while state officials initially said 14. The reported numbers can fluctuates due to the state of cars halfway on or off the track. Protesters across Connecticut participated in a nationwide call to action Friday, to stay out of work, school and stores. The nationwide strike is a direct response to the Trump administration's immigration crackdown. Civic advocacy group Bridgeport Generation Now Votes canceled its operations Friday as a form of protest. That's according to the group's co-director, Callie Heillman, who said she has spoken with others who are taking part in their own ways. "I've seen people say, 'today's the day that I'm going to cancel the subscriptions that l've been putting off," Heillman said. "I see people recommitting to their Target boycott." A Bridgeport book shop also announced it would close for a day as part of the general strike. The killings of two U.S. citizens in Minnesota at the hands of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents, served as the catalyst for the protests that have swept the nation. The most recent incident was the Jan. 24 killing of Alex Pretti, an intensive care nurse. Pretti was shot multiple times by an ICE agent after he used his cellphone to record Border Patrol officers conducting an immigration enforcement operation in Minneapolis. Prior to Pretti's death, the nation erupted in anger over the Jan. 7 killing of Renee Good, a mother of three. Good was shot and killed by an ICE agent at a protest while behind the wheel of her vehicle. Both killings were captured on video and shared in online posts around the globe.
