Thrift stores are a gold mine of vintage lenses but the quality can be a guessing game. This lens in particular was covered in fungus. Normally I would avoid something like this but it was basically free (came with 2 other lenses and a camera body). I’m no stranger to taking things apart but this was a little more than I expected. My only previous experience was disassembling prime lens and those are relatively simple. The other problem was leaving the glass in a cleaning solution over next. Come morning all of the assembly information had evacuated my mind. Luckily I’m stubborn and through brute strength (these are basically fragile legos) I finally put it back together. So was this thrift store find a win? Eh. Vivitar lenses aren’t known for their quality. Its not particularly sharp or fast (f3.8). I have another vivitar lens I really like but its more for its “character” than the optical quality it offers. The lack of “character” in this lens makes its just an OKAY lens. I mean if you can come across a free lens absolutely take it but the time put into this wasn’t worth the results. Also to make this crystal clear, this is not a review of the Vivitar 70-150mm f3.8 lens. Being restored (really brought back to life) the quality of this lens will most likely differ from a mint condition version. Actually not even. I found this lens at a thrift store and I thought I’d try to give it a second chance at life. Disassembling lenses (vintage at least) is actually really easy, they only have a handful of screws. The problem with this lens in particular is the front element is incased with plastic. So my only option was to let it soak in a hydrogen peroxide solution and hope for the best. While its not optically perfect it still produces great results. Part of the appeal for vintages lenses are their unmatched characteristics. A modern lens could produce a “sharper” image but I personally like the softer, dreamy look. . #vintagelens #minoltacamera #sonya7c #photography
