As I fly around the world, my goal isn't just to raise a million dollars to fight childhood cancer-| want to learn about and document the global fight against cancer so l can share those insights with as many people as possible. My stop in Pakistan, though brief, was a learning experience. I had the chance to visit @indushospitalhealthnetwork, one of@stjude many global partners. Just like St. Jude, Indus Hospital is a nonprofit organization where no patient pays a single bill; everything is completely free. Visiting their pediatric cancer ward, I was surprised to meet many Afghan families. These families often walk hundreds of kilometers, crossing borders with the hope of giving their child a chance at life. Tragically, once they arrive and discover their child has cancer, many are forced to make the heartbreaking decision to leave their child behind. It sounds unimaginable, especially after risking so much just to get there. But the sad reality is that cancer treatment takes a long time, and these parents often have many other children at home who depend on them. Staying at the hospital without income means they must choose between the survival of one child and the well-being of their other children. This painful reality is why we must continue to support institutions like St. Jude and Indus Hospital. They are tirelessly searching for better, more effective treatments to give every child a fighting chance. To help raise awareness, here are two common signs of cancer you can watch for: 1. Day 94 of flying to all 7 continents. As many of you may know, the mission of this journey is to raise a million dollars to fight childhood cancer. Unfortunately, flying around the world doesn't automatically generate money-there's a lot happening behind the scenes. I have to create and produce social media content, collaborate with traditional media, seek out sponsors, learn about cancer, plan trip logistics, and more. Wei from Sky Plan surprised me with snacks from China, but along with them, she handed me a letter, a donation, and a handwritten note. While picking up the snacks, she had shared my mission with the shop owner, who happened to be an old friend of hers. The shop owner wanted to donate and even wrote me a letter. Unexpectedly, she opened up for the first time about something personal to Wei, her son has been battling stage-four brain cancer for years. For Wei, it was a shock. They had been friends for years and her friend had kept it a secret all this time. Unfortunately, when Wei told me about this, I wasn’t surprised. Years before I started this journey to raise a million dollars to fight childhood cancer, I found out—though I wasn’t supposed to—that my cousin was battling stage IV blood cancer. He’d kept it hidden to avoid burdening anyone. It kept him from the additional support, love, and presence of those who might’ve helped hold him up. Over time, I’ve realized stories like my cousin’s or Wei’s friend’s are everywhere. Quiet, hidden, and unfortunately common. I refused to let my cousin’s and thousands of others’ stories stay hidden, to be told later only as statistics. This fight is all around us and the mental battle is just as real.
