But since Continuous Insurance Enforcement came in during 2011, every vehicle must either be insured or officially declared SORN (Statutory Off Road Notification). That includes project cars, cars in storage, or vehicles you simply aren’t driving right now. If it isn’t insured and you haven’t declared it SORN with the government, you can still face fines and penalties, even if the car never leaves your drive. It’s one of those rules a lot of drivers only discover after a letter turns up in the post. Police Officer explains why waiting until 1.6mm could be a costly mistake. Tyres with lower tread take longer to stop. In wet conditions at 50mph, a tyre at 1.6mm needs around 6.9 metres more to stop compared to a tyre with 8mm of tread. That gap can be the difference between stopping safely and not stopping at all.
