The Nepali Army has been deployed nationwide from today to ensure the security of the upcoming House of Representatives election scheduled for Falgun 21. With just one month remaining for the polls, a total of 79,727 army personnel will be mobilized under the Integrated Election Security Plan 2082, working alongside Nepal Police, Armed Police Force, and Election Police to maintain law and order. The army will provide security for polling stations, transport of ballot boxes, election officials, and other critical areas, including public buildings, prisons, and airports, ensuring a safe and fear-free environment for voters. In addition to ground deployment, the army will conduct aerial patrols to monitor sensitive and high-risk areas. The Ministry of Home Affairs has instructed Chief District Officers in border districts to coordinate with their counterparts in India and China, strengthen border security, and maintain religious harmony during the election period. Measures have also been taken to control the misuse of social media and ensure heightened vigilance during the Holi festival. On Falgun 21, over 18.9 million voters across 77 districts and 165 constituencies will cast their votes at 10,967 polling stations and 23,112 polling centers. The Nepal Immigration Department has arrested a US citizen for allegedly misusing the names of several prominent Nepali political leaders and other notable figures in identity misuse activities. According to department spokesperson Tika Ram Dhakal, the arrested individual used names such as KP Sharma Oli, Gagan Thapa, Arju Rana Deuba, Mahesh Basnet, and Vinod Chaudhary, among others, labeling them as part of his so-called “dynamic team.” Other respected Nepali personalities were also reportedly mentioned in connection with library, campus service, and administrative teams. The individual, who has visited Nepal over 50 times in the past 12 years on tourist, business, and work visas, was promoting a college in Lalitpur’s Sanepa area under the name Nepal International College, claiming affiliations with Tribhuvan University and Pokhara University. The Immigration Department confirmed that he failed to provide official documentation for these affiliations and emphasized that a single college cannot be formally affiliated with two universities simultaneously. Authorities also noted that the suspect, originally from a mountaineering and business background, had registered a company named Comsd Nepal Pvt. Ltd. to obtain a business visa. Indian police have arrested 10 people, including three Nepali nationals, after seizing counterfeit Nepali currency worth NPR 25 lakh intended for circulation in Nepal during the upcoming Falgun 21 House of Representatives election. The arrests were made near the Nepal–India border in Raxaul, where Indian authorities, along with the Special Task Force (STF), raided a high-tech fake currency printing factory in Majorganj, Sitamarhi. During the raid, police also recovered counterfeit Indian currency worth INR 18,500, printing machines, chemicals, paper, and vehicles used for smuggling operations. Preliminary investigations indicate that the counterfeit Nepali notes were specifically printed in India to influence the upcoming election. Two brothers from Khairahani Municipality-5 in Chitwan, Nishchal Chaudhary (24) and Shankar Chaudhary (20), have received Nepali citizenship through their mother’s name. The Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) has taken three government employees into custody on charges of demanding bribes from service recipients. According to the CIAA, the arrests were made following complaints and intelligence reports alleging that officials working at the Foreign Postal Customs Branch of the Tribhuvan International Airport Customs Office demanded illegal payments while facilitating the export of goods abroad through courier companies. Those detained include Customs Officer Indra Nyaupane and Office Assistant Ganesh Prasad Pudasaini from the Tribhuvan International Airport Customs Office, and Chhabi Prasad Rizal, a Nayab Subba at the Parcel (Export) Section of the Goswara Post Office under the Department of Postal Services. International tourist arrivals to Nepal showed a strong recovery in January 2026, reflecting growing global confidence in the country as a travel destination. According to the Nepal Tourism Board, a total of 92,573 foreign tourists visited Nepal during the month, marking a 15.7 percent increase compared to January 2025. The figures also surpassed pre-COVID levels, standing 14 percent higher than tourist arrivals recorded in January 2019. India remained Nepal’s largest source market, contributing nearly one-third of total arrivals, followed by China, the United States, Bangladesh, and Australia. Nepal will receive grants worth Rs 12.8 billion (INR 8 billion) from India in fiscal year 2026/27, as announced in India’s annual budget. This marks an increase of over INR 1 billion compared to the initial allocation for FY 2025/26.
