The year was 2017, I was a Police Officer in the Gang Unit and we received a call of a shooting that had just taken place. Me and my partner JB were less than 2 minutes away and responded immediately. When we arrived a young woman was lying on the ground, shot multiple times. As I ran towards her she yelled, “My son is upstairs go help him!!!” I sprinted up the stairs and made my way to her 3 year old son who had been shot in the chest and her 5 year old son who had been shot in the hand. I immediately began utilizing every ounce of medical training and prayer I could while we waited for EMS to arrive. EMS arrived a short time later and began discussing how to get their equipment upstairs, I decided it would be faster to carry him downstairs myself. I picked him up, ran him downstairs and into the ambulance. Continued to do CPR while EMS did their stuff. Again picked him up and ran him into the OR and then stayed with him the rest of the night. Ultimately he was called to heaven, and I been with him for the last moments of his life. That brief period of time changed me so much as a Husband, Father, and Police Officer. I made sure that he was never alone and that I talked to him the whole night. I remember thinking to myself how I would have wanted someone to treat one of my sons. We were placed in a poorly lit room after he had passed and I remember thinking my son who was 3 at the time was afraid of the dark. So I sat right next to the bed he was on and talked to him so he wouldn’t be afraid on his journey to heaven. I remember going home many hours later, drinking probably a bottle of whiskey, crawling into bed with my 3 year old son and crying myself to sleep. Thankfully the 5 year old brother who had been shot in the hand made a full recovery. The mother who was pregnant and shot multiple times made a full recovery and the baby was unharmed. Through chance, fate, or God’s timing I was put in contact with that same mother. I got to see that 5 year old boy who is now 13, an amazing football player and awesome kiddo. I got to meet that little girl who is 7 now that was in her mommas belly, who’s birth and health is nothing short of a miracle from God. I was very nervous to see them as I didn’t know what to say or how they would view me. It was great to talk with them and see how amazing they all are and how much strength and courage they display daily. It was by far the hardest call I ever responded to as a Police Officer. Very few days go by where that little dude doesn’t cross my mind in some form or fashion. If I could have traded places with him I would have in an instant. I plan on keeping in contact with them for as long as they will let me. Just remember even though tragedy you can find some good.
