Be wary of #scam 📵callers trying to steal your information by impersonating government authorities and #Saudi officials. Saudi Arabia is a safe and beautiful country and has multiple guardrails to protect from the scammers that try to take advantage of that safety by targeting #expats and #visitors who may not be familiar with local government procedures. I received this call on a Saturday during #Ramadan of a scammer impersonating, an official at the Saudi Ministry of interior. Obviously, as Saudis, we know not to fall these scams, but someone not accustomed to the Kingdom and how our government operates may not be as fortunate. I’ve listed a few red flags to protect you your loved ones from these scammers. Remember to always report scams to (330330) Saudi Communications, Space and Technology Commission (CST) 🚩 Requesting SMS OTPs is a RED FLAG! This is the biggest red flag. A real official will never ask for the 4 or 6-digit verification code sent to your phone. That code is your "digital signature" you you are authorizing them access. 🚩 The "weekend" call, government offices in Saudi Arabia officially operate from Sunday to Thursday. While some emergency services are 24/7, administrative "updates" or "account issues" will not be handled by a random phone call on a Friday or Saturday. 🚩 Asking for your Absher infromation. The government will never need your password to "verify" or "update" your account. 🚩 Calling from a normal number- Official government entities usually call from verified short-codes or landlines. If the incoming call shows a standard mobile number (starting with 05....), it is likely a scammer. Just hang up or if you are a curious journalist like me keep them on the phone ask lots of questions. It’ll make a fun joke at the end of the day.
