We are saddened to hear of the death of one of Britain’s great photographers and print makers, John Blakemore (1936 - 2025), who sadly passed away last week. John Blakemore’s work has had a profound impact on British photography, including his time at Derby University, where he influenced and inspired many students and alumni, teaching there from 1972 to 2001. Just before his passing, John Blakemore donated a collection of 28 prints to the MPF Collection, spanning some of his earliest forays into photography. Here is a look at a selection of the images now housed at the Foundation, which John Blakemore took around his hometown of Coventry in the 1960s. This series observes the people and social conditions of the 1960s, looking at the reconstruction of urban areas following the Second World War, and the blossoming of new communities in post-war britain. ‘John Blakemore was one of the stalwarts of British Photography. We are very happy to have his early work taken in Coventry as part of our collection.’ - Martin Parr
