The ‘squat challenge’ I was obsessed with, and it’s complementary ‘donkey kickbacks’, were the only things I started with leg wise, apart from cardio. Upper body training was non existent because we were told it wasn’t ’feminine’. I had come from playing tennis 3/4 times a week since preschool so I was already fit but there was no information out there on how to get started with muscle building. I also ate way too little food and not much protein. Genetically my actual hip bones curve out and I store most fat in my glutes, so it looked like I knew what I was doing but I really really didn’t. I’m still glad I started when I did because it set a basis of maintenance and movement for 10+ years that I would never be able to get back if I hadn’t. It helped me feel the mind/muscle connection so much more when I started my real leg days. If I was 17 again, I wouldn’t waste time doing Pilates or body weight type exercises, I’d get a trainer and start making use of all the amazing content already out there. Literally don’t be scared of asking a fellow gym girl for help, I’m so happy when I see younger girls start their journey. #fitness #2016 #gymgirl #wellness

What made 2016 such a universally iconic year? Other than the obvious political and economic downfall since then, the world seemed more united and at peace. Trends were fun, everything felt lighter, everyone was freely cringe and nobody cared, which to me is the epitome of chic. It’s absolutely crazy that we’re closer to 2030 now than 2020 and research has fully shown that lockdown changed our brains’ sense of time so there’s a kind of mass confusion right now and a need to manufacture the whole ‘2016 is back’ rhetoric. But it seems like this trend only exists online for now, with people socialising, partying and doing less irl. I started this account in 2015 and in 2016 I was one of the only people I knew who was posting consistently just for fun (ig was soo fun back then, especially before the ai slop started deteriorating our brain cells rn). In 2016, my friend and I were the only people in our school with 10k followers which seemed like a crazy achievement back then. It’s only in the past few years that I started getting brand deals and it’s been such a huge milestone that I never intended to happen. I’m still mentally back there but I’ll always love the creativity of posting just for the fun of it. I also realised in scrolling to the bottom of my Instagram – not an easy task fyi – that I actually ATE back then, probably because I still tried to dress semi timeless, despite the chokers and skinny jeans (which fully deserve a comeback imo). I feel like I became a baddie in 2016 and never looked back (except in my photos lol). I used to always want to look older but now I’m so happy when people think I’m younger, and I still own a lot of the clothing in these photos because I’m a proud outfit repeater ✌🏼 #2016 #2016makeup
