It’s Day 3/34 of #BlackHistoryMonth and I wanted to bring in another personal touch as we celebrate 100 years of Black History. Because as much as this month is about celebration, it is also necessary to reflect as well. Visiting the @legacymuseum and memorial in Montgomery a few years ago was one of the most sobering, reflective, powerful, and most necessary experiences that I’ve had in my life. Finding the name of a family member and learning that he had endured such a traumatic demise was and still is a tough pill to swallow. Which is why I’m so grateful for the work of the @eji_org in telling these stories and preserving this history that folks want so desperately to be done away with. If you haven’t had a chance to visit the National Memorial for Peace and Justice or the Legacy Museum in Montgomery, Alabama—I encourage you to do so. Greensboro, NC— STAND UP *in my Ludacris voice* Being born and raised in Greensboro, having two parents that proudly attended HBCU’s, and having a father that attended NC A&T, there was absolutely no way that learning about February One and revering the A&T Four was optional. The tremendous sense of pride that I feel and have being from Greensboro is largely because of these four brothers (in addition to the various other movement leaders and organizers who operated out of Greensboro throughout the 20th century). Although Jibreel Khazan (Ezell Blair Jr.), Franklin McCain, Joseph McNeil, and David Richmond are widely known as the #GreensboroFour, it is important to highlight and mention that the City of Greensboro did not initially throw any support behind these four young men which is why it is all the more important to uplift and highlight them as the A&T Four. I also cannot make this post without mentioning and highlighting the Belles from Bennett College who were instrumental in the planning and implementation of the sit-ins in Greensboro. Woodson, the Father of Black History, initiated the celebration of Negro History Week, which corresponded with the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln. This year marks 100 Years of the initiation of this celebration and formal observation at a time where it is as critical as ever to celebrate, educate, and observe the countless contributions that Black folks have made not only in the United States, but throughout the world. I originally recorded this video last month after the increased U.S. strikes on Venezuelan boats but fell behind on editing and was just gonna let this one sit in the drafts and collect dust. But with the news of today’s imperialistic actions by the U.S. I needed to let this one fly.
