More than 100 Chinese-made buses on New Zealand roads are the same as those under investigation internationally over security concerns they could be remotely turned off. Local public transport providers said they are closely monitoring developments overseas but are not concerned there is a risk for fleets at home. The company that makes the buses has also strongly rejected international claims over their security. A light plane with damaged landing gear has safely landed at Hawke’s Bay Airport after drama in mid-air prompted an emergency response. Police were alerted to an Air Hawke’s Bay plane flying around Napier Airport with damaged landing gear at 10.06am on Tuesday. The plane managed to land “safely” at 10.17am, a police spokeswoman said. There are nearly 10,000 fewer jobs in Wellington than at the last general election, according to Stats NZ. Data from the Government’s statistics agency showed that in the final quarter of 2023 there were 169,782 jobs in Wellington City, the area excluding other cities in the region such as Porirua and the Hutt cities. The exaggerated figure was because many employers, particularly those in the public service, were headquartered in Wellington. Some jobs that were not based in the city were incorrectly coded as Wellington-based for statistical purposes, exaggerating early estimates of the downturn. New Zealand and the United States are in discussions over a “non-binding” framework relating to critical minerals, as US President Donald Trump’s administration seeks to reduce its reliance on China. The Herald understands the Government is working towards an announcement in the near future. A Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) spokesperson confirmed discussions have been underway between the two governments. There is little detail about what the framework may include, but the United States has been signing deals with other countries to secure critical mineral supply chains, thereby reducing its reliance on China, which is the most dominant player in the market. Dr Bryan Betty speaks with Ryan Bridge on changes in the medical field. Twelve-month prescriptions will be available in New Zealand from February 1. That’s for patients with stable, long-term health conditions, Health Minister Simeon Brown and Associate Health Minister David Seymour announced last year. Currently, most prescriptions are 3-monthly, meaning patients on long-term medications must request repeats throughout the year at a cost. GPs and Nurse practitioners will also be able to diagnose and prescribe medication for adults with ADHD. A tourist boat has capsized off Akaroa, prompting the evacuation of dozens of passengers. The incident involved a Black Cat cruise vessel, which had departed Akaroa Wharf at 10.45am with about 39 passengers and three crew members on board on a dolphin sightseeing trip. The Transport Accident Investigation Commission (TAIC) has now confirmed they are opening an inquiry into the incident and are appealing for witnesses. A fishing vessel crew who responded to a distress call says passengers were “pretty frightened” after the boat began taking on water near Akaroa Heads.

Wellington night owls were treated to a special sight last night when a suspected meteorite lit up the sky. Weather company PredictWind caught the moment on its camera at Heretaunga Boating Club in Petone. A march organised by the group Toitū Te Aroha travelled up Queen St to Myers Park today in support of the Palestine, Arab, and Muslim communities that have been targeted by hate and intimidation. Protesters gathered at Te Komititanga Square (Britomart) before marching up Queen St to Myers Park. Meanwhile, the Freedom and Rights Coalition, an umbrella organisation created by Destiny Church, gathered at Victoria Park. The group planned to march across the Auckland Harbour Bridge. A 12-hour IT failure that created chaos in North Island hospitals was caused by a single hardware component at a commercial data centre and was not impacted by recent job cuts, a health boss says. Speaking on Ryan Bridge TODAY, Health NZ’s acting chief IT officer for digital services Darren Douglass said the outage on Wednesday night was caused by a hardware component failure.
