April is Heartworm Awareness Month! Meet Cheeseburger (formerly known as Buddy). Cheeseburger arrived in August 2023, from another shelter where he was facing euthanasia. Cheeseburger was not only heartworm positive; radiographs revealed an excessive number of BBs throughout his entire body. Instantly beloved for his snuggles and happy attitude, and moved by his heartbreaking story, Cheeseburger quickly found a furever family. A huge thank you to Out to eat with Leo With his family be his side, Cheeseburger started his heartworm treatment, a year-long journey. Beginning with a month-long course of medications and followed by a rest period, Cheeseburger will then undergo three rounds of heartworm treatment injections. Throughout this process, strict activity restrictions, monthly preventive measures, and attending appointments are paramount to his recovery. Upon completion of treatment, Cheeseburger will be retested to ensure he is free from heartworms. Embrace the idea of adopting a heartworm positive dog. You are not only saving a life but also experiencing the incredible bond that comes from giving a second chance! As Cheeseburger's dad can attest to, educating oneself about heartworms can dispel fears and lead to life-changing adoptions. Heartworm disease, transmitted through mosquito bites, is preventable yet fatal if left untreated.
