It’s so hard to come out to your mom when she’s the only family you have, because her love isn’t just love it’s your whole foundation. She’s the first voice you ever knew, the arms that carried you when you were too small to walk, the person who made the world feel less scary just by being in it. When she’s the only one you have, her opinion feels like oxygen. And the thought of losing even a piece of that love feels like you might stop breathing. I lie awake at night replaying every possible version of the conversation. You imagine her smiling and saying, “I love you no matter what.” But your mind is louder with the other possibilities the silence, the confusion, the hurt in her eyes. The idea that her face might change when she looks at you, even for a second, is unbearable. Because if she doesn’t understand where do you go? Who do you have left? Keeping it inside hurts too. It feels like sitting across from her at the dinner table and knowing she doesn’t fully know you. Like hugging her but holding your breath at the same time. You want to tell her because you love her. Because she’s your person. Because you don’t want to build a life that she can’t truly see. But you’re terrified that the truth might create a distance you can’t survive. So I carry it quietly up until I became ready to tell her at the age of 32. You search her words for clues about how she might react. You hope that the same woman who taught you to be brave, to be honest, to be yourself, will remember those lessons when it’s your turn to need them. And deep down, beneath all the fear, there’s this fragile hope that when you finally say the words, she won’t see a stranger. She’ll just see her one and only son who wanted to live free for his life without fear, doubt and confusion throughout his journey. Coming out brought me peace, peace I never thought possible.
