Every time I travel somewhere new I realize how little I actually knew about the place in the first place… No matter how much research you do, or advice you receive, you can never truly know what a place is like unless you go there YOURSELF This is true to varying degrees… I’m always caught off guard, definitely with more random, trivial details (“oh the sidewalks here are better than I thought they’d be”, “oh there’s a Bangladeshi population here, that’s interesting”, “wow, there’s lots of Chinese working on the roads!”, “ahh so this is what they eat for breakfast!”) I’m always surprised, but no place has surprised me as much as Santo Domingo did on my recent visit… it’s a city that I always assumed was sketchy and unredeemable, in a country I thought was dangerous… and now that I’ve just been there, I’m a bit embarrassed at how WRONG I was… a nice city, in a nice country, with proud people. No one will ever solicit more advice about foreign places than someone who doesn’t go there themselves… so get out there and form your own opinion, because the more you travel world, the more safe and loving it will appear 🤙 #travel #thoughts
