Every term, I spend the first few days of my lessons having CONNECT time. It’s a chance for my students to reconnect with each other, realign themselves with being back at school, build the confidence/energy within the class and also, reconnect with me as their faiā’oga. Back when I was at school, coming back to school after holidays wasn’t always the best feeling! I would be tired, sleeping schedule out the gate, I would be missing being with my cousins/siblings at home AND I would come back to school after break and teachers would go straight back into class work as if there were no break and it was SO hard to settle in to be honest 😵‍💫🤪 Now, I make sure that all my students feel connected, safe and ready to go for learning by spending a few days JUST settling in. I’ve been teaching for 15 years now and I’ve done this every year, every term - it’s a lifesaver! 💯 You end up with kids excited to start the term with you, connected students who are confident to participate and engage in learning AND they are appreciative that I give them this SPACE and opportunity to reconnect. I never assume my students know my expectations and our CULTURAL ones either. Many are half Sāmoa, some are out of touch with the culture and so I take time every year in Term 1 to reteach all of these aspects to my students. This is just me - REAL & RAW having a chat with my seniors about MY EXPECTATIONS in my classroom for 2026. It’s really good to have these conversations with students. They also know that if they cross the boundary and let me down, there’s a consequence for it because they’ve explicitly heard me say it. When I started at PHS 9 years ago, one of my dreams was to create an event to celebrate our Pasifika leavers. Fast forward to 2025, this is our third year hosting this event for our kids. Just look at their faces man 😭 it makes it all worth it! ❤️ I thank God that our SLT approved this back in 2023 and have never looked back since 💯 We began the Graduation with a mini parade/procession showing their island flags being walked in by our own students doing Ailao Afi & the Tamaaru Cook Island drummers & even a haka tautoko from our Year 12s whilst all their families watched on. What a moment man 😭🙏 these kids will never forget the effort we put into making this night happen for them. I was tearing up most of the night watching them celebrate ❤️ love my school! Love my job! Replying to @JP_#15 Pt. 3 😭 this was a speech presented by my student Jeremiah. Our school presents two students every year with a “Student Matai Role” under my Sāmoa leadership. They are tasked to support all the work I do in the Gagana Sāmoa space all year. The roles include being bestowed the name To’oto’o (staff) & Fue (whisk) - both Sāmoa measina used in oratory ❤️ Jeremiah was bestowed the title/role To’oto’o and has been right behind me all year. This here was one of highlights of our farewell lunch. Having my own student deliver a speech of thanks in our beautiful Gagana Sāmoa ❤️ it was probably the most emotional & heart-felt Sāmoa speech I have ever witnessed. Replying to @Boom Seki Pt. 2 ❤️😭 A hard truth to accept as a teacher is that some of these kids Im graduating - I will NEVER see them again once they walk out of the school gates. Some will go on to further their studies, some move straight into the workforce, some travel overseas, others pursue their sporting dreams or music aspirations 😍 For me, that means I have a short window of 5 years while I have them at high school to leave an impression on their hearts and make my mark in their lives that goes beyond just teaching them my lessons. It’s something that I do not take lightly 😭 I want them to leave a better person that the one they were when they walked into my room as a Year 9 😭 As I do every year, this was how my final lesson with my Year 13 Gagana Sāmoa class went for 2025.
