The United States is in year 3 of the Decade of Sport. This moment demands more from college athletics. International education & global engagement can no longer be treated as non-essential. When priorities shift or budgets tighten, global learning is often the first thing pushed aside. This mindset is a misstep. International education is a return on investment. Global experiences build cultural fluency, adaptability, communication skills, and a global mindset that directly translate to competitiveness in the workforce. And we are all committed to preparing athletes for life after competition. Fulbright US Student Program offers a proven, globally recognized pathway to connect these dots with intention. Indiana QB Fernando Mendoza and Miami Head Coach Mario Cristobal. Both are Cuban American. Both born and raised in Miami. Both are alumni of Christopher Columbus High School, separated by generations but shaped by the same education and community. The game is being played at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami-Dade County — the county home to the highest concentration of Cubans in the United States. Don’t be surprised when you see the Cuban flag waving proudly in the stands tonight. 💫 For a community long absent from American sports media, this moment is different. It’s a moment of recognition that repositions Cuban identity beyond politics and deficit narratives. No matter which team hoists the trophy tonight, there’s already a clear winner. As a researcher and consultant specializing in internationalization and sport, I’ve watched this crisis unfold for years. What’s happening with the transfer portal and mid-season international signings isn’t surprising. It was inevitable. Why? Because the NCAA is facing a reckoning. Yes, there are rule-breakers and bad actors. But this moment isn’t about individuals. It’s about a fundamental incompatibility between American collegiate sports’ 20th-century amateur model and 21st-century global athletic development. The chaos of the Division I football transfer portal and the controversy around mid-season international signings aren’t connected. But they are symptoms of the same underlying problem. I know how this ends. 😉✌🏾 2025 was hard, but God kept me. There were several times last year when… My creativity stalled. My discipline was inconsistent. And too often, I failed to deliver my best work. So I went back to what I know: running. 🏃🏾‍♂️ A sport that has taught me more life lessons than medals ever could. I trained to compete in a half marathon hosted in San Diego — a city that has brought me clarity and so much joy. Before every single run, I spoke to myself… “Breathe. Trust your training. Have fun.” 💫 Because I knew how each run would end. I didn’t know how fast I’d run… But I KNEW I was gon finish. 🏅 2026 is an important year for me because it represents THE LAST LAP of my PhD journey.
