Maybe it’s your grandmother’s favourite chair that rocked generations of babies to sleep or a dining chair that’s seen a thousand conversations. Now, it’s time for that story to continue… I’m inviting you to share your special piece of furniture with me, something that deserves a second life, a new chapter, and a touch of craftsmanship and care whether it’s a treasured item of your own, something that belonged to a loved one, a gift for a friend, or even a surprise for a work colleague. Because upholstery can be so expensive, I want to offer my services for free for those pieces that might never get reupholstered or upholstered otherwise. Closely working with textile companies and contacts in the industry, selected projects will be lovingly restored in our Cotswolds workshop and featured on our social media channels, where we’ll celebrate the artistry, emotion, and history behind each transformation. My Victorian Armchair Restoration Project is complete with fabric gifted by @lewisandwood ❤️‍💙 On a Sunday walk through the Cotswolds, I came across an abandoned armchair left by the roadside. I could tell the chair had great bones with very pretty turned legs and brass castors. Of course I couldn’t let it sit outside in the elements any longer…. Stripped back to its bare frame, the chair looked tired but full of promise. The first task was to remove every last piece of old upholstery, along with the thousands of stubborn tacks that had held it all together. The frame itself needed attention: joints were tightened, a broken arm that had split into two pieces was repaired, and areas of tack damage were infilled restoring the chairs structure to full strength. From there, the traditional upholstery process began 🪡🧵 Step by step, I rebuilt the chair with webbing, hessian, springs, coir fibre, hair, and wadding, restoring its original craftsmanship. For the finishing touch, I kept things close to home. Just down the same stretch of road where I found the chair sits @lewisandwood, and from there I sourced the fabrics. The main body was upholstered in Chamba in Gemstone, with Wild Rice in Caspian on the arm faces and front seat border. For the piping, I added a personal twist a leftover remnant of burgundy velvet. What began as a roadside find is now a chair that celebrates both tradition and locality, with every layer telling part of its story. Fabric hunting for my next upholstery project 🙌 Lewis & Wood are one of my go-to British suppliers for fabric and wallpaper, and I love that they're just a short drive from my studio. I had a clear plan, knowing exactly which fabrics to trial against my Victorian Armchair – Chamba & Wild Rice. Fabric gifted to me by the wonderful @houseofhackney and this print is called Rainbow Rose 🌈🌹 A little backstory: these Antique French Gilt Armchairs have been sitting in my Mum’s attic for over a decade. We recently thought about selling them as she doesn’t really need or use them. But the truth is, she’d never get back what she paid (they were not cheap!) we just couldn’t bring ourselves to let them go. So, I decided to give them a new lease of life. I reupholstered them with a lot of care, the gilt frames are really delicate so everything I did had to be done very slowly and gently. I removed the TWO top covers and added a fresh layer of calico before using the Rainbow Rose fabric, hand tacking everything in place to stay true to the original upholstery methods. 🎀 To complete the chairs, I applied a flat braid around the edges to cover the tacks…. and because I can never resist a detail, I stitched a little bow onto the back of each chair using French knotting a sweet embroidery technique! It feels so serendipitous to be using @houseofhackney’s fabric on this project, especially as they were named one of @apartmenttherapy 2024 Changemakers and this week I’ve been named on the 2025 list! 💫 #upholstery #antique #armchair #reupholstery #houseofhackney
