Spray painting in the snow #spraypaint #space #artist notes: I wanted to go a little further with my background in this artwork. My goal over the next few sessions will be to continue working on more detailed backgrounds and eventually add foreground elements once I get braver. The main differences in this spray painting are that I achieved cohesive lighting with a central-ish lighting source, used white, red and blue for the stars, and added a ring to one planet and some shooting stars to finish the piece. I thought it might be ruined when it started snowing as everything was quickly getting very wet. I also smeared the backside of my pink planet when I quickly lifted the last stencil. I let the painting sit under cover outside for a few hours while contemplating if it was worth continuing. Once it had some time to dry, I set it up under shelter, fixed my smeared planet, and added the ring and shooting stars to finish the painting. Overall, I'm happy with the piece, and I am glad to be able to share it with you. I hope you enjoyed watching the process. See you in the next one. A distant blue planet with a golden ring - Full process edit #spraypaint #space #artist #draason #spraypaintart #sprayart #spaceart #satisfyingart #stencil Hello! I cut some fresh stencils and tried a new (or old, depending on how long you've been watching me) technique: painting backwards. When using stencils like this, the painting process is essentially reversed. I must start with the background and pre-plan the planet placement, glows and highlights. This was a reasonably straightforward one, as it is a solo planet placed directly in the center. In the future, I'll try the other stencil I cut, which is a 3-planet group. To finish the background, I splatter stars on with white paint and then allow a long time for the paint to fully dry. It is not detectable in the video, but even when I thought this background had fully dried, there were a few tiny spots that still pulled off when I finally lifted the stencil. So, it is important to have more patience than I did. I'd suggest letting this layer dry for a full day or at least an hour if you are impatient like me. After the background layer dried, I placed the planet shape in the center, covered any exposed edges of the painting, and got to work on the planet's texture. I have a habit of painting cool stuff and then covering it up with slightly less cool stuff. Nothing different here. I did a "standard" lift and then added highlights and shading. I followed this up by using my wavy planet texture stencil to create a sort of cloud layer. I added one more layer of shading on top of the clouds to finish the planet. I hid the partial reveal in the video, but at this point, I fully removed the stencils and then carefully placed my ring stencil on the edges of the planet, weighed down the edges that I wanted to lift and then sprayed it with yellow and a little burst of white on the tips. Finally, I lifted the ring stencil and revealed the final piece. I think the colours worked out great, and I was very pleased with how clean and vibrant it looked. I would have liked to see more of the green and blue texturing I applied, but I'll work on that in a future painting. I hope you enjoyed watching the process, and I'll see you in the next one! A distant blue planet with a golden ring - possible signs of life detected. #spraypaint #space #artist #draason #spraypaintart #sprayart #spaceart #satisfyingart #art Hey all. When painting these scenes, something that helps me is to consider that if these were real photos, they would have to be taken by some distant probe documenting interesting things as it hurtles through the universe. Or, in an even more fantastical light, some kind of deep space archivist on a space station purpose-built for the task. I've done some digital art over the past few years from this perspective, and I'd like to build on it more over the next few years. I like to think of these kind of spray paint pieces as a way to capture a small part of this fantasy world. Coming back to reality, I may have bored a few of you with all of these solo planet pieces, but I feel very comfortable with the process again now, and I'm going to be moving on to the next step, which is working longer on my background and reintroducing more foreground elements. So stay tuned for that. But before I get to that, I've got one more video to edit where I tried a sort of fluid art technique, there is promise, but certainly more work to be done to nail down the process. See you in the next one. Draason

happy holidays! #spraypaint #space #artist #draason The year is coming to a close. I only started posting again in November of 2024, but I look forward to keeping it up throughout the next year and beyond. Thanks for watching everything I've put out so far this year. I've been spending a lot of time experimenting with different editing styles and painting techniques to find what I enjoy now, and I've nailed down a few things. If you watched everything, it has been a bit of a whirlwind of style variations. I've got a few more things I'll paint before the new year, and then I will be looking to expand my content to cover more areas of my artistic endeavours. I enjoy pencil drawing, so I expect some videos of that, but I also want to focus on my digital art in 2025. I have a lot of things I want to create that will require me to really polish those skills and eventually move into some other digital art skills on the computer as well. Lots more to come; I hope you stick with me as I endeavour to share this journey into the art world with all of you. Happy holidays, and thank you to everyone who has followed me. #spraypaintart #sprayart #spaceart #satisfyingart #art

Planet cluster in a distant emerald green galaxy #asmr #spraypaint #space #artist #draason #spraypaintart #sprayart #spaceart #satisfyingart Hey there. This time around I made a few “mistakes” that caused this video to not be very suitable for a “tutorial” style voiceover, so I left it out! I do want to continue creating more how to videos. Anyway, here is the full painting process cut more slowly over the course of about 2.5 minutes. I tried not to leave out any significant action. My favourite part of the video is the rumbling sound of a distant airplane that gets deeper and deeper with every cut until it fades out of earshot. Hope you enjoyed this alternative presentation of my work. See you in the next.

How to spray paint this planet #tutorial #spraypaint #space #art To recreate this scene, you will need 5 paints: black, white, purple red, shock red, banana. To begin, cover your planet shape with a black and white gradient, and allow a few minutes for this layer to mostly dry. Then, cover the planet surface with your colour gradient starting with purple red in the bottom-left, shock red in the middle and banana in the upper-right for the highlight. Next, while the paint is still wet, crumple a piece of paper, spread it across the paint, and pull it off. Finish the planet by adding a rounded shadow to the bottom-left using purple red and black. Cover the planet. For the background, begin by first disguising or hiding the texturing you used to create the planet surface. Then, cover the background with your base colour, black. Add a glow around the planet by reusing your three-colour gradient, adding the lightest colour to the top of the planet, and then finish with a burst of white. Finally, spray white paint onto your finger and flick stars onto the background. Remove the planet cover to reveal the finished artwork and you are done!

How I painted a fiery planet scene #spraypaint #space #artist #draason #spraypaintart #sprayart #spaceart 03/04 Here is the third of four paintings I completed during this session. I used the same technique I was working on in the last few videos and used it to create this fire red gas giant planet. If you want to try painting this yourself, I included the name of the paints I used to create this scene at the beginning of the video. I didnt skip over any part of the video so if you watch, you should be able to follow along step by step. Here is a written guide: Start by covering your planet shape with purple red fully. Then, create a gradient by applying shock red to the upper-right side of the planet. Allow this layer to mostly dry before continuing. To complete the planet texture, add a light layer of banana and use a crumpled piece of paper to swipe lightly curved lines through the paint. You dont need much pressure when doing this step. Finish by adding more purple red, and then coke to the bottom-left of the planet to create a rounded shadow. Before covering the planet, I misted the top-right of the planet with banana to create a highlight on the rim. After covering the planet, I applied a thick layer of purple red all around the planet. Then, to hide the texture I used to create the planet, I used the crumpled paper to drag out a sort of star burst effect around the planet. I then covered the textured area with purple red again. I added a first layer of distant stars at this point as well. To finish the background I used the coke paint to cover the corners. To create the planet glow, I circled the planet with shock red, and then banana, and finally added one burst of signal white to the top. Finish with a flick of stars using signal white and uncover your planet to see the result. I hope you enjoyed!

Revisiting my last planet with fresh cans of red and yellow for that soft glow 🌟 #spraypaint #space #artist #draason #spraypaintart #sprayart #spaceart #satisfyingart 02/04 Hey all! Second painting from last night’s session. I reuse the same technique that I used on my last planet, refined some parts of it and used some fresh cans of red and yellow paint to get a softer and more vibrant glow around the planet. I’m really pleased with the result of this one and the only self critique I’d give is that I should’ve skipped the white spray on the planet surface (not the white glow behind the planet). It didn’t really add anything and only served to dull the planet colours. It certainly didn’t ruin the painting, but if I had skipped it, it would’ve been just an extra percent or two more vibrant. That’s all for now. Enjoy!

Wipe texture planet and empty paint cans #spraypaint #space #artist #draason #spraypaintart #sprayart #spaceart 01/04 - December 15, 2024 Hey! I stopped posting from my backlog of footage to share this painting I did today. I planned the structure of this painting first in procreate before trying it for real. So many of the paintings I did in my last session just lacked contrast. My goal with this one was to remedy that. I took inventory of the paint I had left and sat down with procreate to see what colour combos I could come up with. I landed on this one and set up a painting space outside and got to work. One of the other things on my list to practice are these wipe textures where the colours streak across the planet. I’ve got a little work to do on that texture but the final result is still very nice and I am proud of this one. Most of the spray paintings I have left in my backlog are honestly pretty bad. I was planning on being brave and sharing all of them but in the end, I think that that’s not worth it and I’m not gonna subject you guys to looking at a whole bunch of bad paintings that I’m not even proud of myself. So I’ve got about four more from that session that I will share and then I will just move on and work on some new stuff here. Enjoy and see you in the next one where I try to recreate this planet once more with some fresh paint.

Earth-toned dwarf planets amidst an asteroid field #spray #paint #space #artist #draason #galaxy #supernova #nebula #spraypaint #spaceart 19/40 Hey. We are finally on to the last colour variation of these no-black galaxy scenes. Green. I wanted to try using a different colour for the planets in this one, but I forgot that I should have used the green still to do the shadows. So the result is a little flat, but still quite nice looking. I'm a fan. I started this painting by setting up one planet and two moons. I did a few layers of lifts until I found a result that I was happy with, covered the planets and did the same process on the moons. Afterwards, I wiped away excess paint so that I could start laying down background colours. I mostly filled the paper with green for the background and then a stripe and burst of yellow paint across the middle. I built up the overspray and accentuated the planets some, and then followed up with a white starburst. I finished with a white splatter for stars, lifted the plates and did a dark brown splatter for distant asteroids. Finally, I finished the painting by adding larger asteroids to the foreground. Hope you enjoyed the process. Thanks for watching :) Draason

subtle purple planets #spray #paint #space #artist #draason #galaxy #supernova #nebula 18/40 Back at it again with the same galaxy. Now in purple, for the second time. I kept trying small variations of these scenes. This time, I started by doing my planets and then I wanted to keep the middle of the painting where my galaxy was going to be very bright. I tried hard not to put paint down in the middle by twisting up a little paper worm and putting it down before I started painting the background. It mostly worked and I had a nice little irregular white shape in the middle of the painting that would have worked well for my initial vision. I kind of got lost in the sauce somewhere though and this just turned into what is essentially a compilation of me covering up cool paint textures with not quite as cool paint textures. I wanted to put these dark "arms" of some kind of gas cloud structure like you see in pictures of the horsehead nebula and things like that. I got a good start, but then I just covered it all up with light purple. Idk what I was thinking with that move. Anyway. The end result is nice, even if the planets are barely visible. The purple haze was thick in this galaxy. See you in the next one. It's not going to be purple.

purple nurple. i don't like this one. #spray #paint #space #artist #draason #galaxy #supernova #spraypaint #spaceart 17/40 Hey there hi there. It's me again. Do you like purple? This one's for you. Today I'm sharing painting number 17. I used purple, light purple and white. The actual paint names are escaping me but I'm about to run out of those colours anyway and I don't think they will be returning, at least not in that brand of paint. I'll have to start keeping track of the specific colours I use. The light rays are nice here. When I moved to purple, I was thinking of painting a more serene and just generally gentle sort of scene. I always seem to want to critique my own work too hard, but the planets could use more dimension again, the rounded effect is just not quite there for me. Otherwise, I'd say that I accomplished what I set out to do with this painting. In any case, they are really just practice for bigger pieces in the future. Today while editing this video, I got the chance to use a plotter to do some custom stencil cutting. So now I have four or five stencil sheets cut with various designs to test out. I've got pointed star fields, four-pointed star clusters, planet shapes, designs and rings. I'm looking forward to giving these a try and finding out if they will become mainstays or not. See you in the next one. Draason
